More Restaurant Recommendations…Boston, New York, and Beyond

Not every great restaurant is in a major urban area. Here are three recommendations from fellow Nomads:

La Campania (in Waltham, MA). …they have a fantastic wine list and I have a consistently-great experience each time I go (which is quarterly, at least).”

The Fireplace (Brookline, MA) is elegant, friendly, and easily accessible on the T (subway — C Line to Washington Square).

Ayuthai in Guilford CT is great for Thai food!”

And from one super-resource in the uber-urban area of Manhattan:

Pastis
9 Ninth at 13th
*The most delicious bloody mary in the city.  Brunch is fantastic and so is dinner at this traditional French bistro.  French onion soup, burgers and the fries aren’t to be missed.  It’s been around for years but is always packed, so call ahead.  A total scene but totally worth it.

Mermaid Inn
568 Amsterdam at 88th
*This new outpost on the UWS has become my neighborhood fave; the original is in the East Village.  It’s a New England-style seafood restaurant with a great selection of wines.  I highly recommend the lobster roll and fries.

Morandi
211 Waverly Place at Seventh Ave South
*This feels like Pastis’s Italian sister.  Same great vibe with plenty of outdoor tables when the weather is nice.  And it’s in the heart of the West Village, so there’s lots of great things to do in the neighborhood.

Fleur de Sol
361 Greenwich Street
*Delicious tapas in Tribeca, which I think you’ll really like.

Magnolia Bakery
401 Bleecker at 11th
*The best cupcakes in the city – think traditional cake with sweet, sugary icing.  Absolutely sinful but worth every calorie.  Also been around for years but still boasts lines around the block.  Try the UWS outpost if you’re ever in the neighborhood; it’s a little quieter and the staff is nicer.  Can’t go wrong either way.

Three that are Fun for Cocktails (and we’re always up for a cocktail in tough times like these):

Mandarin Oriental Bar, 36th Floor
At the Time Warner Center, entrance on 61st between Broadway and Columbus
*Great views of Central Park and the city, plus the Time Warner Center is a great place to wander around.

Peninsula Hotel, Salon de Ning
Fifth at 55th
*Great views of Central Park and the city and a fun outdoor area for when the weather’s nice.

Plaza Hotel, Champagne Bar, Lobby Level
Fifth between CPS and 58th
*An upscale lobby bar that’s great for people watching in the famed and newly refurbished Plaza.
