A dispatch from fellow Nomad Mark Miller of M.Miller:
If you are heading to Dallas on business or pleasure (or already live there) and like your accommodations artsy, and intimate with a bit of architectural history, then check out the Belmont Hotel.
Located in Oak Cliff, resting atop a stone bluff, this 1940’s era motel has been restored to its former glory and style as designed by Dallas architect Charles Steven Dilbeck.
“Driving up to the Belmont is like entering a different city. The hillside hideaway presents a secluded hangout favored by guests and locals alike”.
From drinks at the Bar Belmont with its expansive outdoor terrace, clever cocktails and interesting wine-beer-liquor selection, to an organic and locally grown breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Cliff Café (you can also eat at the Bar), the Belmont is delicious, delightful and intriguing.
Outfitted with a pool, Health Club and other assorted amenities, the Belmont also features a variety of ongoing in-house events more than enough to keep you entertained. During my recent stay, the bar/ lounge featured a “Lou Reed” style singer-songwriter playing acoustically…
On Friday the 13th they screened the Alfred Hitchcock classic “Psycho”…)
While my visits to the Belmont have been an all around positive experience like any Hotel the Belmont is NOT for everyone. If you like your stay to be more predictable, exclusive or exceedingly toney, look elsewhere.
The Belmont, is not vanilla, not perfect and not high end. It is a boutique hotel on the wrong side of the tracks (Oak Cliff is a neighborhood in transition filled with 40’s era boarded up motels and bail bondsmen)…but you will find a staff eager to please, a fun cool environment where you will meet and mingle with fellow travelers who share your idea of a good time.
