Any business trip offers opportunities for a cocktail or two. Perhaps you have to entertain a client. Or you are getting to know a colleague a bit better. In any event, get out of the hotel bar and explore the local scene. In New York, bars are harking back to the days of speakeasies (though we hope without the bathtub gin). So, too, are bars like Varnish in LA and the Violet Hour n Chicago.
They’re not always easy to find and you better to be ready to order an Old Fashioned or other proper cocktail (no white wine spritzers here) but you’ll have more to talk about than whether the Dow was up or down a few points.
If you are among the few who still has an ample expense account and a group to entertain, check out the ultimate speakeasy experience in the wine cellar at the legendary ’21′ Club in New York. You’ll clamber through the kitchen and climb through a secret doorway, pass the private wine stashes of celebrities, and enter a sumptuous subterranean dining room. I still don’t understand why it seats 22 and not 21 (since this is the 21 Club) but it is one of the most special dining experiences in Manhattan.
