Ah, European hotels (many of my trips, either for vacation or technical conferences) are there. The typically reasonable rates include breakfast. European hotels do not define "breakfast" as "stale roll and lukewarm coffee." Breakfast is a choice of cheeses, salmon slides, cold cuts, scrambled or boiled eggs, bacon, grilled tomato halves with a slice of melted cheese on top, cereals, juices, yogurt, and coffee. Isn't civilization nice? The United States should try importing some.

Just after I wrote about this, Scott McCartney over at the Wall Street Journal wrote an in-depth article about this growing phenomenon. I don't think it is fair but it is the way it is for now.

Glory be to God! Someone has finally identified this tragic problem. It just pisses us off to no end when a waiter cannot describe the difference between an '07 Ripple and an "06 Thuderbird.

Let me start by saying that I love Executive Nomad above all travel blogs. That said, as a frequent traveler, I always do room service. I'm not ready to face strangers, and I can work out (I take lightweight equipment with me), do email, read the news on my iPad, return calls, watch the news, all at once if I'm feeling particularly peppy. For me, the extra price is worth it; breakfast is an oasis at the start of the day. And yes, I have returned items and had to call back for forgotten things, but it's all worth it. And I second the vote for Henrietta's table -- it is a great spot for....brunch.....

Shanghai can be a tough place for foreigners to really experience due to language and logisitical challenges, especially with only a few hours to spare. Trave.ly is a marketplace where foreign travelers in Shanghai can discover and book "different" travel experiences offered by locals and expats living in Shanghai. The offerings range from cooking to eating to shopping to running tours and classes. Worth a look www.trave.ly
